Carpet cleaning buying guide

Floor cleaning

Carpet cleaning goes one step further that vacuuming alone to wash your carpet fibres and remove ground-in dirt and stains. Vacuums, even the best ones only get some of the dirt is deep in your carpets. The carpet cleaning process is engineered to reach the dirt vacuums leave behind, with some carpet cleaners leaning carpets up to 10 times cleaner than vacuuming alone*. Although deep cleaning does so much more than vacuuming, the actual effort needed is about as easy as vacuuming.

Do it yourself carpet cleaning is an easy and affordable task for households of all budgets and skill levels. Whether you constantly clean up spots & stains or occasionally clean all the carpets in your home, owning a carpet cleaner has definite benefits.

How does it work?

Carpet cleaners use a combination of clean solution, powerful scrubbing brushes and vacuum suction. Carpet cleaners inject a mixture of cleaning solution and water deep into your carpet fibres. Brushes then agitate, scrub and loosen the dirt and/or stain and then the powerful vacuum suction lifts it away.

What is deep down dirt or ground-in dirt?

Deep down dirt and ground in dirt isn’t just the dirt from your shoes or the dirt that you see when you vacuum. What you don’t see are the invisible particles like skin cells, pollen and food particles that are left behind by vacuuming.

Your carpets can hold as much as one pound of soil per square foot before it is even noticeable! Regular carpet washing reduces the wear by removing fine debris and large dirt particles that scratch and dull your carpeting, which can accelerate wear and tear. Plus, you not only save money & time by doing it yourself but also protect the investment you have made in your home, keeping your carpets looking newer for longer!

How often should I deep clean?

It is recommended that carpets should be deep cleaned at regular intervals to maintain good indoor air quality. Carpet cleaner manufacturers recommend you deep clean your carpets at least 2 times a year. If you have children, pets, allergies or smoke, you should wash your carpets with a carpet cleaner at least 4 times a year with continuous spot cleaning in between.

Does carpet cleaning work on all carpet and fabrics?

Carpet machines are safe and effective on virtually all carpets, although certain wool’s require extra care. As for upholstery fabrics, silk and velvet should not be deep cleaned. Of course, you should always follow the furniture manufacturer’s treatment instructions before using a deep cleaner.

What is the difference between a carpet cleaner and a steam cleaner?

Many people refer to a carpet cleaner as a “steam cleaner”. While steam cleaners do exist, these should be used for hard surfaces only. A steam cleaner uses actual steam to clean various types of surfaces, and this steam can damage carpet fibres and remove the protection. A carpet deep cleaner is designed to force a mixture of hot water and cleaning solution into the carpet to clean deep down. The solution and dirt are then extracted from the carpet, leaving the fibres and carpet base clean. So unlike actual steam cleaners, carpet deep cleaners do not use steam.

How often should I change the solution in my carpet cleaner?

Depending upon the model you own, when your dirty tank has reached the full line, it is time to empty and refill your clean water/solution tank. Keep an eye on your fill line, so you know when to empty and fill with more solution and water combination.

How should I care for my carpet cleaner to  maintain the life of my machine?

  1. Empty and rinse the dirty water tank after every use and before storing
  2. If your machine contains any filters or gaskets, wipe debris from these screens
  3. Check the brush roll after each use to clean any debris that has attached. If the brush can easily be removed, remove and rinse with hot water.
  4. If you used your hose & tool, be sure to rinse and dry these before storing.

How can I get the best results from my carpet cleaner?

  1. First, Vacuum the area to be deep cleaned.
  2. PreTreat badly stained areas with a specialist Pretreat Formula : 1137E or 1147E
  3. Fill your clean water tank with hand hot tap water and the recommended cleaning solution per the manufacturer’s instructions
  4. While pressing the trigger make one slow forward and backward motion
  5. Repeat on the same area without pressing the trigger. Repeating multiple times will help aid in dry time!
  6. Once your carpet is dry, vacuum again to remove any remaining dirt & debris.

Carpet deep cleaning is an easy and affordable task for households of all budgets and skill levels. Whether you constantly clean up spots and stains or occasionally clean all the carpets in your home, owning a carpet deep cleaner has definite benefits.

What are the different types of Carpet Cleaners? How do I choose?

Carpet cleaners are like vacuums – They come in all different shapes, sizes and colors, so how do you know which one is the best? First, there are two types of carpet cleaners:

Full Size Carpet Cleaners:

These are for cleaning larger areas like whole rooms, hallways and area rugs.

Compact Carpet Cleaner:

The name explains it all- they are small and portable. These are great for cleaning accidental spills and stains. They clean smaller more concentrated stains and are great for stairs, upholstery and auto interiors.

Now that you understand the difference, how do you pick from the wide array of carper cleaners? There are a couple of key features that you can look out for. Below is an explanation of some of the features that you might see on carpet cleaners. Pick and choose what is important to you and then find a deep cleaner that has some or all of your desired features!

Lightweight: These are full size machines, but have a smaller footprint for smaller spaces. They are easy to carry from room to room and great for area rugs!

Hose & Tool: Deep Cleaners with hoses & attachments make cleaning stairs, upholstery & other hard-to-reach areas a breeze. As an added bonus, look for carpet cleaners with an attached hose & tool, so you do not need to attach it yourself!

Pet:  Great for pet owners! Carpet cleaners that offer solutions for pet owners are the best way to go. They usually feature a cleaning solution that removes all of those smelly pet odours and bad pet stains.

2 Machines in 1: What does this mean? It means that you get 2 machines in 1. Not only is it a Full-Size Carpet Cleaner, you can detach a portable spot cleaner too. You get the best of both worlds!

Hot Water Heater: Do you clean your dishes and clothes with hot water? Why not do the same for your carpets? Before the cleaning solution is injected into your carpet, it goes through a heater to raise the water temperate to maximize your cleaning effectiveness.

HeatWave Technology™ and how it works: Heat from the machine’s motor is cleverly redirected into a vent that is located beneath the machine’s water tank to keep water at a constant cleaning temperature.

Multi-Surface: Why only wash your carpets when you can also clean your hard floors? Carpet Cleaners with Multi-Surface features come with an additional tool, so you can clean your hard floors too!

Brush Type: There are many different types of brushes. From stationary brushes, to spinning brushes and even rotating brushes- look for more cleaning rows and brushes for a more effective clean.

Water Tanks: Clean Water Capacity, Dirty Water Capacity, Separate Clean and Dirty Water Tanks, 2-in-1 Tank. These are all the types of tanks you can expect to find on a Carpet Cleaner and each has their own purposes and benefits depending on the each individual carpet cleaner.

Surround Suction™: Surfaces dry fast with full-width suction feature that is located on the sides of the carpet cleaning brush bars.

EdgeSweep™ Brushes: Small brushes located on the side of the carpet cleaning nozzle to help you clean against baseboards and around furniture.

Integrated Carry Handle: Helps you carry your carpet cleaner from room to room with ease.

Cleanshot™: Heavy-duty spot cleaning system (on selected models) that allow you to focus on specific stains at the push of a button.

Ready Tools Dial: Enable you to change between deep cleaning your carpets to spot cleaning with your hose and tool with one easy step. On the more advanced models the ready tools dial allows you to choose between light clean, normal, heavy traffic and rinse settings.

What type of carpet shampoo should I use in my carpet cleaner?

Cleaning formulas are designed to clean a variety of different types of messes and stains. From smelly pet stains to allergens, deep cleaning formulas are an integral part of the carpet cleaning process.  What do you need to look for in a carpet shampoo?

Don’t forget! If you have a portable spot cleaner, these require the use of a specialist cleaning formula for a smaller machine. Look for formulas that are marked for “compact” carpet cleaners.

How long will it take for my carpet to dry after carpet cleaning?

Drying time will vary by the type of carpet, thickness of the pile and the cleaning techniques of the user. On average, it’s best to wait four to six hours before walking on the carpet after deep cleaning. However our latest carpet cleaner, the ProHeat 2X® Revolution™ carpet cleaner  dries your carpets in about an hour**.

How large an area will a carpet cleaning machine handle?

When using a full size upright carpet cleaning machine, typically a 10′ x 12′ room can be cleaned before the dirty water tank needs to be emptied and new cleaning formula and fresh water need to be added.

With smaller upright carpet cleaning machines, typically an 8′ x 8′ area can be cleaned before the dirty water tank needs to be emptied and new cleaning formula and fresh water need to be added.

These amounts will vary based on how much water/solution you are releasing onto your cleaning surface.
